Well another Waterfowling Season is almost upon us. We have already started dusting off the decoys. Ol' Colt is getting restless for some goose wings. In his eyes Hooters' chicken wings ain't got nothing on a goose wing. We have a little work to do on the haybale blinds to get them ready to roll. Other than that we are pretty much set. Geese have'nt started showing up yet from up North and the resident flocks are laying low. Did see a small group cruising at Goodwins' farm yesterday .Not much corn being cut yet. Once the cutting gets in high gear We'll start seeing some more activity.

You might have noticed that We have a new member to the J&H Team this year. Join with us in giving a warm southern welcome to Jon. He's a might bit shy and declined the photograph session(just kidding). We will be getting a few pics of him on here soon.Soon as We can get his new Realtree Camo dirtied up a little. We look forward to having another "Young Gun".

Sept.1 2008   Opening Day

Opening day 2008 started off pretty slow.  As stated before the geese are laying low for the most part.  Not much corn being cut as of yet.  We set up in a small cut field at the beautiful Grandview Farm in Orange County. Dave Jr.didn't get their until after we had set up.  Had a small group skirt the blinds about 7am but could'nt get them to commit. About 8am had a small group of about 12 come in.  We managed to get four.  Score Benelli (1) Mossberg (2) Remington (1).  Looking forward to the  farmers to start some cutting.  Will be hunting the Kenwood farm once Monk cuts the corn over yonder.

Sept. 4  Day 2

Day 2 on Thur.9-4 started with our ritual of breakfast at Hardees. The weather was mild and  the sun was just beginning to peek over the trees when we( Dave,Jr.and Dave Sr.) began setting up on Black Level Road on the Grandview farm. The first flock of 6 arrived about 720am from G'ville way. They pretty much locked up and sailed in quietly after only a couple clucks from the Tim Grounds Half Breed, and the Zink Paralyzer SR-1(Super calls by the way!!). We managed 2 down on the first pass and hit 'em with a loud comeback call and picked off 1 more on the second pass. We began breaking down the Otter Outdoors haybale blind around 9am. On the way out of the field at 920am we had 2 small groups come over the field looking to land. Oh well, get 'em tomorrow. Benelli scores 3.

Sept.5
Day 3

We got set up shortly before 645am on Black Level Road. Had a group come from Shenandoah Crossing around 7am and they headed towards the barn at the main farm. We figured they were heading to the horse farm further up Rt. 15. Shortly thereafter 2 came in from G'ville and set down just outside of the deeks. After about 5 minutes of some low murmurs on the Half Breed and Zink Paralyzer ( You had better get these calls!) they began to ease towards the spread. They were making their way up the hill in the middle of the spread when the group we thought were going to the horse farm started back. With just a few clucks of the calls the group of about 12 locked up and sailed in. After the barrage of devastating firepower was delivered 9 bulletproof geese flew away, all feathers intact. Total: Benelli (3). See ya next trip.

December 15, 2008

The season up until this day has been pretty dismal as far as numbers are concerned. The prospects for new areas to hunt are limited. This morning ushered in the re-opening of the split season. The geese haven't been pressured for a couple of weeks, so Brandon, Dave Sr., and Dave Jr. decided to set up at the Pond. They set 4 floaters and about 8 full bodies just to the left of the blind. With a southwest wind, the group figured the geese would land just outside the front of the blind in the pocket they had left. About 715am the first group came by to investigate. With just a couple of soft clucks from the Power Maximus the first geese of the morning came coasting in. In exactly an hour this group of talented waterfowlers had limited out. They put the old john boat they had left at the Pond to good use.Remington(6) Benelli(7).

December 31, 2008

The last morning of 2008 dawned bright and cold. Jeff and Dave Jr. decided to set the haybale blind out in the field on Black Level Road that we had hunted back in the early season. They set out a spread of about 35 full bodies and sillouettes. The geese have been extremely shy and not responding well at all to calling. After having a couple of pretty good size groups go by with another destination in mind, Jeff and Dave Jr. decided to try some pass shooting. A group of about 8 came by just a little too close for their comfort. They raised up and both got off 1 quick shot a piece. Jeff rocked one and Dave Jr. managed to knock one down. We let him lie there for a while hoping for some more. When Dave Jr. went down to retrieve him,( He's a pretty good dog) He discovered a little jewelry(His first, thank ya, thank ya very much). The ol' boy is now resting comfortably at Jennys Taxidermy. Benelli(1).
